Job Summary
We are seeking a mission-focused and experienced financial leader to serve as Director of Accounting for our charitable organization. This role is responsible for overseeing budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting while providing financial leadership for the organization’s largest agency, Family and Community Services. The Director of Accounting reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and manages a team including the Accounting Manager, Contract/Voucher Manager, Client Financial Analyst, and Adult Guardianship Program.
Essential Competencies for Success
- Expertise in Federal and New York State nonprofit human service funding models and regulations.
- Deep experience in nonprofit finance, including accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, and revenue cycle management.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Proven leadership experience as an effective manager and team leader.
- Ability to build strong partnerships with internal finance teams, agency leaders, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Oversee personnel and systems executing day-to-day accounting and financial reporting.
- Ensure the timely preparation and distribution of all financial reports, including regulatory reporting, consolidated fiscal reports, quarterly reports, and budget reports.
- Lead monthly and annual financial statement preparation and review.
- Coordinate scheduling and completion of the independent audit and external financial reports.
- Financial Compliance & Process Improvement
- Maintain financial records and accounting systems to ensure compliance with regulations and contractual requirements.
- Assist with the development and enforcement of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Guide adherence to best practices and drive process improvements in financial operations.
- Strategic Leadership & Budgeting
- Provide financial leadership and strategy to support the charity’s mission and decision-making.
- Lead the monthly closing process and financial reporting for the President & CEO, Finance Committee, and Board.
- Support annual operating and capital budgeting efforts.
- Provide analytical and strategic financial support to the President & CEO and Leadership Team.
- Program Financial Management
- Oversee financial aspects of various Programs.
- Lead the preparation and submission of vouchers to funders of various programs.
- Maintain effective working relationships with external regulatory agencies and funders to address provider payments and financial reporting issues.
Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (Required).
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (Preferred).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (Preferred).
Knowledge & Experience
- 10+ years of progressive nonprofit finance and accounting experience.
- 5+ years of managerial or director-level financial leadership experience.
- Proven ability to forge strong partnerships with senior leadership and external stakeholders.
- Track record of leading financial teams, managing multiple priorities, and executing strategic initiatives.
Salary: $100,000 to $135,000
