Shelter - Resident Advisor

Albany, NY
The Resident Advisor (RA) is responsible for a variety of activities related to the provision of emergency shelter for the homeless. The categories of activities are to maintain a safe, clean and comfortable environment, including grounds; protect the residents’ rights; promote the social, physical and mental well-being of the residents; participate as a team member to assure program consistency and respond to emergency situations as the need arises.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs screening/intakes on new referrals and documents same; answers phones, sends and receives faxes, copies, files, etc.

2. Directs and documents residents’ daily living schedule, including housing and job search, treatment attendance, CM/CW appointments, etc.

3. Be familiar with each resident’s Individual Service Plan (ISP) and assists CM/CW with implementation of plan, including: participating/co-facilitating in-house skill building groups, social/recreational activities, and self-help groups.

4. Explains and implements the program policy and sets limits as the need arises.

5. Surveillance of the grounds and security of the facility.

6. Interacts with residents to become aware of needs that would warrant referral or advocacy.

7. Keeps accurate documentation, which includes, and is not limited to, the following: intake packet, waiver, logbooks and progress notes.

8. Crisis Intervention per shelter policy and procedures; responds to all shelter emergencies.

9. Prepares and serves meals according to a prescribed menu.

10. Maintains the facility in a clean, safe, comfortable manner. This may include, but not limited to: program laundry, managing residents’ belongings per shelter policy, cleaning and rubbish removal, etc.

11. Reports at change of shift to staff, both verbally and/or written to provide for continuity of care of the residents.

12. Attends and participates at regular staff meetings.

13. Other duties as assigned
